Dental Implants

For some people, ordinary bridges or dentures are uncomfortable or even impossible to wear, due to sore spots, poor ridges or gagging. At Downtown Dental Centre in St. Catharines we offer a variety of dental services for your oral health, including dental implants. Dental implants are metal posts/frames that are surgically placed into the jawbone beneath your gums, and eventually fuse to your jawbone. Once in place your dentist can mount artificial teeth or bridges onto them, providing stable support which won’t allow your replacement teeth to shift or slip in your mouth which is especially important when eating or speaking. This secure fit helps the artificial teeth or bridges feel more natural than conventional bridges or dentures.

Dental implants are permanent and cannot be removed by the wearer like dentures can. They benefit general oral health because unlike bridges, they do not have to be anchored to other adjacent teeth. If you are considering dental implants, you must have healthy gums and adequate bone to support the dental implants, otherwise you may require a bone graft or a sinus lift, which can be determined by your dentist at st. Catharines Downtown Dental Centre. A strict oral hygiene/cleaning routine, and visits to our dentist for a general checkup on a regular basis are critical to the long-term success of dental implants.

In addition to the range of dental services that we provide our esteemed patients, at Downtown Dental Centre we offer two different types of dental implants:

Endosteal dental implants

These dental implants are surgically implanted directly into the jawbone. Once the surrounding gum tissue has healed, a second surgery is needed to connect a post to the dental implant. Finally, an artificial tooth (or teeth) is attached to the post individually, or grouped on a bridge.

Subperiosteal dental implants

These dental implants consist of a metal frame that is fitted onto the jawbone just below the gum tissue. As the gums heal, the frame becomes fixed to the jawbone. Posts, which are attached to the frame, protrude through the gums. As with endosteal dental implants, artificial teeth are then mounted to the posts.

As a tooth replacement treatment, you can barely tell dental implants apart from your natural teeth. You often need dental implants when there has been extensive damage to your tooth or tooth root, and are usually only applied if one or a few roots needs to be replaced. We always remind our patients from St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, Welland, Thorold and surrounding areas to follow up with our centre at least twice a year in order to avoid any preventable tooth damage. It is especially important to come in for regular dental services such as oral hygiene/cleaning and general checkups, so that your teeth never reach the damage level of needing dental implants. Being proactive about your oral health is important!
