Inlays/Onlays

Also known as indirect fillings, inlays/onlays are custom made in a dental laboratory from composite resin material, and attached to the teeth with adhesive dental cement. Inlays/onlays are used when a tooth has mild to moderate decay, fractures or cracks, or there is not enough tooth structure to support a standard filling/restoration or crown. The difference between inlays and onlays is:

Inlays

Provided there is no damage to the tooth cusps, an inlay is placed directly onto the tooth surface and fits inside the top edges of the tooth.

Onlays

When the cusp or a greater portion of the tooth is damaged, an onlay is used to cover the tooths entire surface by extending over its top edges.

Inlays and onlays are durable, provide support to help strengthen your teeth, restore your tooths shape, and help to prevent further decay or deterioration. Inlays/onlays also help you to avoid future dental treatment by prolonging your tooths life. At Downtown Dental Centre in St. Catharines we offer inlays/onlays that are custom created to fit your teeth perfectly.
