Root Canals

The dental team at Downtown Dental Centre in St. Catharines, Ontario offers a range of dental services, which includes root canals. Root canals are required when damage to a tooths root causes it to become infected or inflamed, and toothache, tooth discolouration, swelling and irritation of the surrounding gums, and a general feeling of pressure and pain to occur. The most interior part of the tooth is called the “pulp”, which is composed of nerve tissue, lymph tissue and blood vessels. When the damage goes into the pulp, it can cause the tooth to start to die. The most common reasons that cause the pulp to become damaged are a cracked tooth, a deep cavity, dental trauma or repeated dental treatment. At St. Catharines Downtown Dental Centre, our dentist follows a series of steps to ensure that your root canal is done safely and effectively:

X-rays

If your dentist suspects you may need a root canal, he will first take X-rays or examine existing X-rays to determine where the damage is located.

Anesthesia

Local anesthesia is administered to the affected tooth. Contrary to popular belief, a root canal is no more painful than a filling!

Pulpectomy

An opening is made through the crown of the tooth to the roots/pulp chamber, where the infected tooth pulp is removed.

Filling and capping

The canals are shaped for filling material called “gutta-percha”, which help to keep the canals free from infection or contamination. The filling is then topped with temporary dental cement in order to seal, or “cap” it, until a permanent crown can be placed over the top of the tooth to finish it off.

Root canals help to prevent tooth extractions, and save numerous teeth a day at Downtown Dental Centre. With regular oral hygiene/cleanings, general checkups and good brushing and flossing habits you can avoid root canals altogether!
