Sedation dentistry uses medical sedatives to help patients remain calm during treatment. If you feel anxiety when you visit the dentist, or if you’re sensitive to pain and discomfort, you may find sedation dentistry helpful to keep you relaxed.
Oral Sedation
Oral sedation, or moderate sedation, comes in the form of oral medication that you take before your appointment. The sedative effect will take effect and make you feel relaxed and free from anxiety during your treatment. We sometimes combine oral sedation with nitrous oxide sedation to enhance the sedative effect. Please note that oral sedatives will leave you legally impaired and unable to drive so you will need to arrange a ride home after your appointment.
Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide is the most commonly used dental sedative. It produces a mild to moderate sedative effect that reduces your anxiety and sensitivity to pain. Nitrous wears off quickly and doesn’t impair your ability to drive.
